The Process

Every internationally trained dentist has a different journey. Some choose to apply to Advanced Standing IDDS programs, others pursue residency programs. Both paths have their pros and cons. Explore what works best for your situation, your goals, and your timeline.

  1. 1

    Credential Evaluation

Get your dental degree and transcripts evaluated by an approved agency such as ECE or WES to confirm equivalency.

  2. 2

    English Proficiency

Pass the TOEFL. Most programs require a minimum score of 100 or above, or 5 with the new TOEFL score system. Always check each school's specific requirements as they vary by program.

  3. 3

    INBDE

Pass the Integrated National Board Dental Examination. This is required by most advanced standing programs.

  4. 4

    Build Your Profile

Gain US clinical experience through dental assisting, preceptorships, volunteering, CE credits, and research. A strong profile makes a difference.

  5. 5

    Application Requirements

Prepare your application materials including your personal statement, CV, letters of recommendation, and any additional documents required by each program.

  6. 6

    Choose Your Path

Some internationally trained dentists apply to IDDS Advanced Standing programs. Others pursue residency programs. Both paths are valid and both have pros and cons. Research both options and explore what aligns best with your goals.

  7. 7

    Bench Test

Many programs require a bench test as part of the admissions process. Prepare early and practice as much as possible.

  8. 8

    Interview

If selected you will be invited for an interview. Prepare your story, know your profile, and be yourself.

  9. 9

    Acceptance

Receive your acceptance and begin your journey as a US dental student.

This is based on my personal experience. Always verify requirements directly with each program.
